20.08.2026 Steel Engineering for Neutron Star Research

Extreme conditions, maximum precision and 153 metric tons of steel: For the CBM experiment at the FAIR facility in Darmstadt, von Schaewen manufactured the magnet yoke for a superconducting dipole magnet.

The experiment is designed to help scientists explore matter under conditions similar to those found deep inside neutron stars. Our contribution: a highly precise welded steel structure that guides the magnetic field through the detector, enabling accurate particle measurements.
From material procurement and flame cutting to welding, heat treatment and final machining – the entire manufacturing process was carried out in-house at von Schaewen in Essen.

We are proud to contribute our steel expertise to international cutting-edge research.
